Executive Functioning Coaching for Students in Middle School, High School, and College
The Strategies You Need to Succeed.
As funny as the name sounds, Executive Functioning doesn't refer to people who wear a suit to work - but rather, to the area of our brain that basically functions as its CEO, and the skills it governs. Executive Functioning skills all have to do with managing oneself and one's resources in order to achieve a goal.
For example -
Do you feel like you need help learning how to manage strong emotions? That's the executive functioning skill of self-regulation.
Do you wish you could sustain focus, especially for tasks that are long, boring, or tedious? That's the executive functioning skill of attention.
Is it particularly hard for you to start tasks that don't interest you? Yep - that's the executive functioning skill of task initiation.
Organization, planning and prioritizing, time management, cognitive flexibility (taking the perspective of parents and teachers) and metacognition (insight into how you think and being able to monitor your own thought processes) are all executive functioning skills.
With every year of school, the demands on your executive functioning grow more and more intense. The assignment that would have been broken down into small chunks in middle school is assigned as a semester-long project in high school, and becomes one of many papers due in college.
And yet, many schools do not offer support in building these skills. The truth is that almost all students could benefit from support around executive functioning - especially as they get ready to make the transition to college.
At Organized Mind, I specialize in helping students (and their parents) with Executive Functioning skills - and I do it every day. Using a customized approach, we'll look at all the areas where your Executive Functioning skills impact your daily activities.
