You really can focus and THRIVE with ADHD. And you’re not alone.

Many of my clients have a diagnosis of ADHD - and they are frustrated because the main treatment they have been offered is medication. Or sometimes psychotherapy. But it often takes them years to find coaching.

If you have a diagnosis of ADHD, medication can be very effective. But it is often only a first step.

Medication can help you:

  • Slow down in elementary school - but it doesn't usually help you complete larger projects in high school.

  • Focus - but it can't help you decide what's important to focus on.

  • Stop you from doing things impulsively - but it can't manage your time, get you started ahead of time, notice time passing, or remember what you need to at the right time.

Medication can't help you:

  • Get organized, or plan for you.

  • Get started when you are feeling paralyzed.

  • Keep track of your assignments or remember your appointments.

  • Navigate your relationships with friends, teachers, or parents.

  • Help you with feelings of shame, guilt, or low self-esteem.

Many of my clients come to me because while they have found their medication helpful, they are still struggling with managing life and daily tasks. Others have found that the medication they were prescribed has side effects which they cannot tolerate, and they do not have the skills they need.

Medication also doesn’t know how to help you leverage your strengths.

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, chances are there are a lot of things your brain does very, very well.

For example:

  • While you might have trouble focusing when bored, you are probably excellent at hyperfocusing - particularly if you are interested in or motivated by the topic at hand.

  • If you have been labeled impulsive or easily distracted, you are probably also immensely curious, highly energetic, and naturally creative or entrepreneurial as well.

  • If you have been told you can't follow directions, you may be extremely innovative.

  • And despite a reputation for procrastination, when your motivation is aligned, you can be fiercely good at taking action and accomplishing things.

Psychotherapy can help you learn about yourself, but it often isn’t enough for those struggling with ADHD.

Therapists can help you learn more about how your brain works, and what your gifts and challenges are. And psychotherapy can be immensely helpful. But helping with ADHD often requires getting into the details.

You need a solution tailor-made for you. And you need to get into the nitty-gritty.

At Organized Mind, we look at all the areas where your ADHD may be impeding your daily activities. Because ADHD can impact everyone you are connected to, we will talk to your family members, too - and help you talk to them. I am here, literally the coach in your corner, to help you figure out how to leverage your brain's unique strengths to help you overcome the areas that you find difficult. Then, together, we develop a plan structured around them. We develop strategies to help you manage time, balance priorities, get organized, overcome procrastination, and build greater self-confidence.  And as you begin to follow through on them, you’ll be amazed at all the things you can do that you didn’t think you could do before - and how your life, and your relationship to school, friends, parents, and everything else will change.
